East Village
From BMEzine Encyclopedia
The East Village has been the nexus of hipness in New York City since the early 1950s. General modern wisdom sets its boundaries at 3rd Avenue on the west, the East River on the east, Houston Street on the south and 14th Street on the north... though there are many who fiercely deny that Alphabet City (everything east of 1st Avenue) is part of the East Village.
Today the East Village harbors dozens of tattoo and piercing shops, some of the most crapulent on 8th street between 3rd and 1st avenue, also called St. Mark's Place. Andromeda makes its home there however, and is arguably not crapulent. East of St. Marks place, you'll find such places as Paul Booth's Last Rites, Venus Modern Bodyarts, and New York Adorned.
The East Village is the home of Webster Hall, which is where the influential Night of 1000 Scars took place.
