Princess Diana
The late Princess Diana, formerly the spouse of Prince Charles (the current heir to the British throne), was a cutter and one of the first celebrities to go public with her cutting drives. In 1995 she told the BBC, "You have so much pain inside yourself that you try and hurt yourself on the outside because you want help."
Princess Diana cut herself on her arms and legs using a razor and at other times a lemon slicer, as well as injuring herself by throwing herself into a glass cabinet at one of their palaces. She also cut herself on her chest and thighs in front of Prince Charles, who thought she was faking her problems. Once after a fight on an airplane, she cut herself up in the bathroom and smeared blood all over the cabin during the flight.
Diana's struggle with self-harm was one of the first times the general public became aware of the problem, especially in an older woman.
As A Piercing
A Princess Diana is also the name of a female genital piercing:
- "The Princess Dianas are usually a pair of piercings with small rings or L-bars (14 gauge, 3/8” or 7/16”) that sit up under the hood tissue, much the way a VCH does. However, this is a pair of them turned outward to the sides. They can be done in a diagonal or horizontal placement (but under the hood, right next to the clitoris!)"
