Shawn Porter is the body modification archivist of both his personal collection, and for lack of a better term, the curator of the Jack Yount Collection—one of the most extensive documentations of the early piercing underground in America. Shawn Porter has been running the SPC website since 1995.

Shawn co-founded ModCon, and was the host of ModCons 3.5 and 4.

Shawn also started the ScarWars project, which held its first event in May 2005, and is a long-time BME QOD staff member.

Brief Biography

  • Born August 2nd 1974 in Plant City, Florida. Currently living in Philadelphia, PA.
  • Met Jack Yount while only 15 years old. Jack went on to become his mentor.
  • His brother, Robert IAM:Criticalbob, is also surgcially modified, tattooed, scarred and pierced.
  • His SPC website ran from 1995 to early 2006 before a catastrophic crash corrupted the files. Self described as “irresponsible”, Shawn had no backups of the 1000s of images, only the html pages.


Interest in Body Modification

  • Shawn was hospitalized extensively as a child. His elementary school librarian often sent him care packages of books to read while in hospital. One book that particularly moved him was The Decorated Body by Bain. This book influenced a then 8 year old Shawn to attempt a foreskin piercing. His ears were pierced at 13, and his first tattoo was done professionally, with parental consent and alongside his brother, at 15.
  • Shawn’s father Robert (aka: the Gator) got tattooed with his two sons in 1991- which is his only tattoo to date.
  • At age seventeen, Shawn, already wearing several smaller tattoos, had Guy Aitchison tattoo a large biomech piece on his leg.
  • Though the host of the world’s only Scarification/Branding convention, ScarWars, Shawn only has two scarification pieces: XXIII (now tattooed over) by Keith Alexander and a facial cutting by Brian Decker.
  • Beginning before puberty, Shawn began “weight training” his scrotum- with a combination of a custom made “bull bag” and leather bands, Shawn had his scrotum to a maximum length of 7" before slowing down (and eventually stopping) with the training.

Personal Body Modifications

  • Shawn is extensively tattooed by a collection of amazing tattooists. Guy Aitchison, Dave Breuhl, Chad Chesko, Kimmie Durham, John H., Josh Hoffman, Kevin LeBlanc, Bud Pierson, Skip Sampson, Mike Wilson and a host of others have tattooed the majority of his body with what Shawn refers to as “Powerpop” and “Gods and Gangsters” iconography.
  • Earlobes stretched to approximately 1" (no jewelry worn in them)
  • The holes for a 6g septum (no jewelry worn) piercing and frenum piercing (no jewelry worn) are still open, but Shawn has had a varied collection of piercings over the years, including helix, nostril, labret, ½" nipples, ½" PA, dydoes, guiche, scrotum and several forgotten others.
  • Two symmetrical “biomech” implants, carved by Jesse Jarrell and installed by Steve Haworth on the backs of his calves.
  • Meatotomy by Jack Yount.
  • Cuttings by Keith Alexander and Brian Decker.


Industry Experience

  • As a website, the SPC existed for a decade to share information- with a slant towards History and Advanced Modifications, with other like minded individuals. It was the first media- print or internet, to published photos of “Stonehenge”, a self amputee who went on to be known as both “ToeCutter” and “Subtracting” and featured the internet’s only galleries devoted to the “Old School” of piercing/modification.
  • It’s hardcopy counterpart, which takes up a room in Shawn’s South Philly apartment, contains tens of thousands of rare photographs, a large archive of 1980s/90s surgical 8mm tapes and other hard to find memorabillia.
  • Shawn helped to “co-create” the Modcon events with Shannon Larratt as a means to get people interested in surgical and erotic body modification together to meet, share tips and work in 1998, and has been a part of every MC event since, including hosting 3.5 and 4.
  • Seeing a lack of communication in the Scarification community, Shawn created the “Scarwars Art Project”- a collaborative art effort joining together Scarification Artists, Tattooists, Writers, Photographers and clients to create events that push the boundaries of the Cut/Brand Scene.
  • Shawn accepts a small handful of modification projects a year- specializing in Meatotomy and Hood Splitting, but is very selective when it comes to clients.

Sexual Deviant?

  • Shawn is well known in the BodyMod scene for being very public about his sexual deviations and fetishes. Coming from the “Old School” of Modification, where most if not all of the participants were into Mods as a sexual outlet, Shawn feels that sexuality was removed from the scene with the influx of the youth culture.
  • While the list of his fetishes would be longer than the list of his modifications, Shawn is particularly proud of his obsession with Big Butts, White Cotton Panties and Golden Showers. And he doesn’t care if his Mom reads that.

Trivia

  • Shawn’s first name is Kevin.
  • Other than his Modification collection, Shawn collects DVDs (his collection currently tops 2600, with Horror, Cult and Criterion being main focus) Comic Books, Pushead and Jeremy Fish art and original work by Lynette May, Art Balthazar and Coop.
  • Shawn hosts several IAM related parties every year, including the Zombiethons, The HoHoHoedowns and other gimmicky titled events.
