Stiff Scars

Scar tissue, especially when relatively young, is harder, stiffer, and less elastic than normal skin. As a result, there can be some restriction in motion with larger pieces.

The following report was sent to us by a reader with a large cutting on their chest by a well-known and talented artist:

"When healing an extensive cutting, stiffness may occur during scar tissue formation and extend into the post-healing period. For a large cutting, it may hamper mobility and be painful. For a small cutting or a surface that does not flex readily (outside shoulder facing, top outside of leg, etc.), the stiffness may be less noticeable."
