The tragus is a small cartilage projection in front of the ear canal — according to Gray's Anatomy, it is "so called from its being generally covered on its under surface with a tuft of hair, resembling a goat's beard." Tragus piercing is a common body piercing in modern times.

From an acupuncture point of view, there is a point near the tragus that has been used by German anesthesiologists to reduce the need for anesthesia (confirmed in controlled tests). This acupuncture point is also used in curing traumatic ocular muscle paralysis.

Quinn wrote us to add, "If pressure is applied to the area in front of the tragus, it will slow bloodflow to the ear - very helpful if you have a stubborn conch or helix piercing that won't stop bleeding!"
