In the sense of body modification the lip is either of the fleshy folds of skin surrounding the mouth. They are composed of non glandular mucous membrane. Given their anatomy they are perfect for supporting many types of piercings.

The word "lips" is also used in reference to the inner or outer labial lips of the vagina.
