A tattoo in Hawaiian culture on the tongue, a guardian symbol.

The talisman-tattoo or guardian symbol was tattooed on Hawaiian natives' tongues to commemorate the death of a great chief and to be sure he would be pleased with them when they entered the kingdom of the dead.
